Global G.A.P.
(Good Agricultural Practices)

A risk management system that identifies and controls hazards throughout the food production process. A foundation for most food safety standards is legally required in many countries.

  • Who it’s for: Food processors, packhouses, exporters

  • Scope: Food safety risk management system

  • Focus: Identifies and controls potential hazards in the production process.

  • Often, a legal requirement or baseline for certification in processing/exporting food.

HACCP (Hazard Analysis
and Critical Control Points)

An international standard that integrates food safety and quality assurance systems, focusing on process control and continual improvement across the supply chain.

  • Who it’s for: Agroprocessors, exporters, food manufacturers

  • Scope: A global standard integrating food safety and quality systems

  • Focus: Management commitment, food safety policy, continual improvement

  • Compatible with: HACCP and ISO 9001

ISO 22000 (Food Safety
Management System)

Covers organic farming practices without synthetic chemicals or GMOs. Promotes soil health, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. Required for organic labeling in local and international markets.

  • Scope: Organic crop and livestock production standards (no GMOs, synthetic pesticides, etc.)

  • Certifiers include: ECOCERT, USDA Organic, EU Organic, and East African Organic (Kilimohai Mark)

  • Focus: Soil health, biodiversity, consumer health, and eco-sustainability

Promotes ethical trade practices, fair wages, and environmental protection. Common in cooperatives and used to access socially responsible markets in Europe and North America.
